Para muchos, Michael Jackson no murió. Creen que vive en Brasil y maneja un taxi. Pruebas de ello parece haber de sobra. Un video en YouTube de un taxista de Minas Gerais imitando al Rey del Pop causa sensación en Internet.

Sus pasajeros se sorprenden cuando suben al taxi de Jean Walker y el brasileño de 30 años los entretiene cantando a capella las mejores canciones del malogrado artista norteamericano.

Algunos cuentan que si se tapan los ojos tienen la sensación que el mismísimo Michael Jackson conduce el taxi. Será cuestión de comprobarlo en persona.

Aquí conoce a otros esclavos: Juba (Djimon Hounsou) quien era un cazador (según dice él, pero el tratante de esclavos dice que lo compró en una mina de sal) de Numidia, y Hagen (Ralf Möller), de los pueblos bárbaros de Germania. Juba se convierte en su amigo y compañero de equipo, permitiéndose con él sostener conversaciones acerca de la vida y la muerte, y de la manera en que Máximo se reencontraría con su familia en el más allá.

Entretanto, en Roma, Cómodo ha sido coronado emperador, y para ganar el favor del pueblo inaugura varios meses de juegos en el Coliseo, lo que incluye reabrir las peleas de gladiadores que habían sido canceladas por su padre, bajo el pretexto de rendirle homenaje. Próximo emprende un viaje a Roma con sus gladiadores, en busca de oportunidades...
